Warning: Use the kryptonite method at your own risk

Kryptonite methodHave you ever seen how bad habits return easily?

Fighting against them to forge a new habit is already a difficult process. It feels like a war.

Even when you think you have already won, the bad habit is lurking around, just waiting an opportunity to return and make your life a mess again.

One simple slip is all it takes to let it come back into your life, and the battle must be fought all over again.

This is frustrating, I know.

But there is a way the most experienced warriors use, it’s not easy but it’s truly effective.

The bad habit feels like a super villain

Curiously, resistance is the one pulling the strings of all the bad habits, it’s like having your very own nemesis.

It seduces you to make just one tiny slip and allow one of your overcame enemies to return. But how can resistance do this?

Let’s take for example one of my own bad habits: Reading people’s minds.

No, I’m not the Professor X, but from time to time I think I can predict what people are thinking. If I could do it I would be the center of the party, but I can’t, I just think I can.

Before starting Enso Journey I thought I could understand what people wanted without asking. You know with my all “mighty mind reading fake-powers”. This trapped me into a vicious cycle trying to get everything perfect for the thoughts I was reading.

Sounds truly idiotic, doesn’t it?

I got lucky from time to time, but that doesn’t mean I’m actually reading people’s thoughts, I just made a good estimation and it worked. In any case, there is no way I can turn into Professor X.

Where does this fake-super power (bad habit) comes from? The same place that can make you or break you.

Fake super powers comes from what you believe

To be honest and after a long time analyzing myself, I came to one simple conclusion: it’s just a way to justify yourself.

If I could get a penny for each thought I was able to read, I would have maybe one penny, two if I’m lucky.

The bad habit comes from an already existing anchor or behavior to justify my own actions and remove the idea that I’m responsible for my life.

It’s plain fear hiding behind our rationalization.

Notice how far your brain can go to justify yourself? It can make you believe you have super-powers just to spare you some pain. Your brain tries hard for you to avoid mistakes and it will do anything it cans to justify you. That’s not the best way to grow.

So how can you escape this behavior? How can you really get over the bad habits.

Using another construction of the mind: Kryptonite.

The kryptonite method

Yes, I’m making an insane amount of reference to super heroes today, but stick with me for a little while, this method really works.

Reading minds is just a fake super power constructed by your brain, like any bad habit it’s just there to keep you from doing what really matters. In the same way you can create a token that represents a way to lose it.

You just need to carry an object to remind yourself that you are unable to keep doing the same bad habit and it’s simply easier to something else, like a good habit.

It’s simple, but it requires a bit of effort on your part.

You need to turn the token into kryptonite. Now, don’t worry there is no chemical skills required, your mind will do all the work.

Just follow these steps and you will get your very own kryptonite:

  • Find a small object you can carry around: A ring, old coin, even a small stone can work wonders. Anything that fits in your pocket or you can carry around without being too uncomfortable works, I use one of my rings.
  • Find a quiet spot and take a deep breath: Remember we do this to clear the mind and get ready to do some mind work.
  • Visualize your fake super-power, I mean bad habit: This part is truly important, you need to be clear on the FAKE part of it. In my case I visualize how many times your “reading mind power” has failed or got me into trouble.
  • Hold the object in your hands: See it, feel it and if it makes a sound listen to it too. Feel how this object drains the bad habit out of you, when you have this object you just resort to a good habit instead of the old one, like asking questions instead playing Professor X.
  • Take another deep breath and think of another thing: Let’s break your state, and focus on something else, like cute cats or elephants riding a bike.
  • Repeat all steps above 3 times.

It’s truly important to run this whole exercise uninterrupted, otherwise the kryptonite won’t become as powerful as it should be.

Time to practice

It’s time for you my fellow warrior to practice this exercise. It can help you remove bad habits and turn them into more positive ones, just remember this:

  1. What a great strategy! I love the idea of using a token as a mindfulness tool. As I get ready to go back to the classroom in a few weeks, I can see how useful it’s going to be to help remind me that anything that doesn’t relate directly to my classroom and my kids is just noise.

  2. I think this is a brilliant idea, Alejandro. And I’m going to use it right away on my own (fake) super power of reading minds! Yes, you and I have that in common. Then there are all those other bad habits that I prefer not to talk about. I’m going to need a ton of kryptonite. :)
